If you’ve purchased a Rainshaker design and want to take it to the next step by turning it into an oilskin, we now offer this service. At Rainshaker, we have spent a long time creating a special blend of oils and waxes that forms a weatherproof membrane, strengthening the fabric and increasing its waterproofness.
The process takes roughly six weeks and follows a carefully curated method to ensure the treatment stage is done correctly. Once your design arrives back at our facility, the item is washed in a cold tub with wool wash and then hung out to dry fully. Once completely dry, our oil-blend re-proofer is applied, which consists of boiled linseed oil, Australian beeswax and pine-derived gum turpentine. The item is then hung in a low-humidity dry room with a running fan, so the oils dry within the correct time frame and the curing process is efficient.
After the drying time is up, we weather in your design by washing off any remaining oils. Exposing it to water after it has dried helps the waterproofing contract into any microscopic holes where water could seep in. This technique was first used by sailors in the early 18th century to weatherproof their cotton canvas sails, as they found that dried linseed oil repels water extremely well.
